About This Course

Overview

Nestled on the pristine western shores of Oahu, within the exclusive Ko Olina Resort, lies the magnificent Ko Olina Golf Club. This Ted Robinson-designed masterpiece is more than just a golf course; it's an immersive Hawaiian golf experience, celebrated for its stunning beauty, strategic challenge, and impeccable conditions. As a premier resort course, Ko Olina seamlessly blends world-class golf with the luxurious ambiance of its surroundings, making it a must-play destination for discerning golfers visiting the island of Oahu. It's not just a beautiful course; it's a championship proving ground, proudly hosting the LPGA Lotte Championship, a testament to its formidable layout and pristine maintenance. For those seeking an unforgettable round in paradise, the Ko Olina Golf Club offers an unparalleled journey through Oahu's captivating landscape, where every swing is accompanied by the gentle caress of trade winds and the vibrant hues of tropical flora.

Course History & Heritage

The story of Ko Olina Golf Club is intertwined with the vision of creating a world-class resort destination on Oahu's leeward coast. Conceived as the centerpiece of the Ko Olina Resort, the course opened in 1990, designed by the legendary architect Ted Robinson. Robinson, renowned for his innovative use of water features and a philosophy that golf should be both challenging and aesthetically pleasing, found the perfect canvas in Ko Olina's relatively flat terrain. He transformed what was once a dry, arid landscape into a verdant oasis, integrating lagoons, waterfalls, and lush tropical plantings that have become the course's signature. His design philosophy, often dubbed "Robinson's Oasis," is vividly displayed here, creating a dramatic contrast with the surrounding natural environment and the distant volcanic peaks.

From its inception, Ko Olina was destined for greatness. Its resort-style layout, while welcoming to players of all skill levels, presented a strategic test that quickly garnered attention from the professional golf world. The club's commitment to excellence in course conditioning and hospitality led to it becoming the proud host of the LPGA Lotte Championship, an annual event that brings the world's best female golfers to Oahu. This prestigious tournament has cemented Ko Olina Golf Club's reputation on the global stage, showcasing its challenging design and breathtaking beauty to an international audience. The club's heritage is one of thoughtful design, continuous enhancement, and a steadfast dedication to providing an exceptional golf experience, firmly establishing it as a jewel in Hawaii's golf crown.

Course Layout & Design

Ted Robinson's design at Ko Olina Golf Club is a masterclass in blending natural beauty with strategic golf. The 18-hole, par-72 layout stretches across a meticulously manicured landscape, characterized by wide, forgiving fairways that invite aggressive play, yet demand precision on approach shots. Robinson's signature use of water is evident throughout, with numerous lagoons, streams, and cascading waterfalls coming into play on more than half of the holes. These water features are not merely decorative; they are integral to the strategy, often guarding greens, lining fairways, or creating intimidating carries that challenge golfers to commit to their shots.

The course unfolds with a captivating rhythm, moving from open, expansive holes to more intimate, tree-lined corridors. The bunkering is strategically placed, often deep and penal, forcing players to think carefully about their tee shots and club selections. While the elevation changes are subtle, Robinson masterfully uses mounding and contouring to create visual interest and add complexity to lies and approaches. The greens themselves are often large and undulating, presenting a variety of pin positions that can drastically alter the difficulty of a hole. They are typically fast and true, demanding a delicate touch with the putter.

One of the most striking aspects of the Ko Olina Golf Club design is the seamless integration of its tropical environment. Plumeria, hibiscus, and other vibrant native plants line the fairways, filling the air with their sweet fragrances. Palm trees sway gently in the trade winds, providing both aesthetic beauty and an additional strategic element as they can influence ball flight. The course is designed to be walkable, though carts are readily available, offering a relaxed pace of play that allows golfers to fully immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings. Every hole presents a new vista, from views of the resort's luxurious lagoons to glimpses of the Pacific Ocean and the majestic Waianae Mountains in the distance, creating a truly unforgettable visual journey.

Robinson's Oasis Philosophy

Ted Robinson's "Oasis" philosophy is on full display at Ko Olina. He believed in creating courses that were not only challenging but also beautiful and enjoyable. This is evident in the generous landing areas from the tee, which provide a sense of playability, contrasted with the precise demands around the greens. The abundant water features, while visually stunning, also serve as strategic hazards, compelling golfers to make thoughtful decisions. The lush landscaping and vibrant flora transform the course into a verdant paradise, offering a stark and beautiful contrast to the often arid natural landscape of West Oahu. This blend of playability, challenge, and aesthetic appeal defines the Ko Olina experience.

Signature Holes

While every hole at Ko Olina Golf Club offers its own unique charm and challenge, a few stand out as true masterpieces, embodying the essence of Ted Robinson's design and the spirit of Hawaiian golf.

The Waterfall Par-3 (Often Hole 8)

One of the most photographed and memorable holes on the course is a spectacular par-3, often cited as the 8th hole. This gem requires a precise tee shot over a dramatic water feature to a green guarded by a magnificent multi-tiered waterfall. The sound of cascading water provides a serene yet slightly intimidating backdrop as you stand on the tee. The green itself is often subtly sloped, adding another layer of challenge. It's a hole where beauty and strategy converge, demanding both courage and accuracy to avoid the water and the surrounding bunkers. Successfully navigating this hole leaves a lasting impression and a sense of accomplishment.

The Strategic Par-4 (Often Hole 13)

Another standout is a challenging par-4, frequently recognized as the 13th hole. This hole perfectly illustrates Robinson's strategic use of water and contouring. The tee shot often requires careful placement to avoid water on one side and well-placed bunkers on the other. The approach shot is equally demanding, typically played to a green that is either partially surrounded by water or features significant mounding and bunkering. The prevailing trade winds can also play a significant role here, turning an already tough hole into an even greater test of skill and course management. It's a hole that rewards thoughtful play over brute force.

The Dramatic Finisher (Hole 18)

The finishing hole at Ko Olina, the 18th, is a truly spectacular par-4 that culminates the golfing journey with a flourish. This hole is renowned for its dramatic water features, often involving a significant carry over water or a forced lay-up for the less adventurous. The approach shot is typically played to a green fronted by water and framed by the luxurious clubhouse in the background, making for a grand and often nerve-wracking finish. The pressure of the final hole, combined with the stunning visual appeal, makes for an unforgettable conclusion to your round at Ko Olina Golf Club. It's a hole where birdies feel earned and pars feel like triumphs, leaving you with a lasting memory of your Hawaiian golf adventure.

Playing Conditions & Difficulty

Ko Olina Golf Club is renowned for its championship-level playing conditions, maintained with meticulous care year-round. The fairways are consistently lush and verdant, providing excellent lies, while the greens are fast, firm, and true, offering a consistent putting surface that challenges even the most seasoned players. The rough, while not overly penal, is thick enough to demand recovery shots, adding to the strategic elements of the course.

Rated as an advanced difficulty course, Ko Olina presents a formidable challenge that requires strategic thinking, precise shot-making, and a good understanding of course management. The primary difficulty stems from Ted Robinson's clever use of water hazards, which come into play on many holes, forcing carries and demanding accurate approaches. The numerous strategically placed bunkers, often deep, also add to the challenge, requiring skillful sand play.

Perhaps the most significant factor affecting playing conditions and difficulty on Oahu's west side are the legendary Hawaiian trade winds. These consistent breezes can vary in intensity, often requiring golfers to adjust club selection, aim, and swing tempo. Playing into the wind can add significant yardage, while downwind holes demand careful control to avoid overshooting greens. Crosswinds require a precise understanding of ball flight and trajectory. These natural elements ensure that no two rounds at Ko Olina are ever exactly alike, adding an exciting layer of unpredictability and requiring adaptability from every golfer. Despite its advanced rating, multiple tee boxes ensure that golfers of varying skill levels can find a comfortable yet challenging experience, making Ko Olina a rewarding test for all who step onto its fairways.

Awesome golf course. Kids play free after 3pm They have club rentals $40 for 9 or $80 for 18 holes. The greens are fast and course is pretty wide open. If you’re half way decent, you shouldn’t lose many balls. The fees we paid 125 for an adult. And club fees also included the golf cart, driving range buckets, 2 waters and 2 souvenir cups, and 2 sleeves of balls. Beautiful course with lush greenery, waterfalls, some ocean views, and mountains. I would play here again 100%
