Royal Hawaiian Golf Club: The Complete Guide to Oahu's Rainforest Golf Experience

Overview

Nestled deep within the lush, verdant rainforests of Windward Oahu, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club stands as a testament to Hawaii's diverse and breathtaking landscapes. Formerly known as Luana Hills, this public 18-hole championship course in Kailua offers an unparalleled golf experience, a dramatic departure from the island's more common coastal links. Carved meticulously into the natural contours of the Hawaiian jungle, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club golf course presents an advanced challenge, demanding precision, strategic thinking, and a keen appreciation for nature's raw beauty. For the discerning golfer seeking an immersive, unforgettable round amidst towering trees, cascading streams, and the symphony of tropical birds, this Oahu golf course is an essential destination.

From the moment you arrive, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club transports you to a world where golf and nature intertwine. The air is thick with the scent of tropical flora, and the vibrant greens of the fairways contrast sharply with the deep emerald hues of the surrounding jungle. This isn't just a round of golf; it's an adventure into the heart of Hawaii's wild side, a true rainforest golf experience that will test every club in your bag and every ounce of your concentration. As Hawaii Golf Time's definitive guide, we delve into what makes the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club a must-play for serious golfers visiting Oahu.

Course History & Heritage

The story of the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is one of transformation and enduring vision. Originally conceived as Luana Hills Country Club, the course opened in the early 1990s, brought to life by the legendary golf course architect Pete Dye. Dye, renowned for his challenging and visually striking designs, embraced the formidable terrain of Windward Oahu, crafting a layout that worked with, rather than against, the dramatic elevation changes and dense rainforest. His signature style—characterized by railroad ties, strategic bunkering, and a demanding yet fair test of golf—is evident throughout the property.

Luana Hills quickly gained a reputation as one of Hawaii's toughest and most visually spectacular courses. Its remote, jungle-clad setting provided a unique contrast to the resort-style courses found elsewhere on Oahu. Over the years, the course underwent a change in ownership and a rebranding, emerging as the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club. While the name changed, the core essence of Dye's original design and the awe-inspiring natural environment remained. This transition ensured that the challenging and magnificent rainforest golf experience would continue to be accessible to golfers from around the world. The Royal Hawaiian Golf Club continues to honor its heritage, maintaining the integrity of a design philosophy that sought to integrate golf seamlessly into one of the most vibrant ecosystems on Earth.

Course Layout & Design

The design of the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is a masterclass in integrating golf into a challenging natural environment. Pete Dye's genius is on full display as the course winds its way through deep valleys, up steep hillsides, and across natural ravines. The fairways are often narrow, bordered by impenetrable jungle that swallows errant shots with ruthless efficiency. This demands a high degree of accuracy off the tee, rewarding precision over power.

Elevation changes are a constant companion throughout the round, offering dramatic downhill tee shots that seem to plunge into the jungle canopy, followed by challenging uphill approaches to elevated greens. Streams and natural water features, fed by the abundant rainfall of Windward Oahu, come into play on several holes, adding both beauty and strategic complexity. The greens themselves are typically smaller than average, undulating, and often well-guarded by bunkers or the surrounding terrain, requiring a deft touch with the short game.

Unlike many Hawaiian courses that boast ocean views, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club offers a different kind of vista: an immersive panorama of lush, unspoiled rainforest. The towering Koa and Monkeypod trees create a canopy that provides shade and a sense of intimate seclusion, making each hole feel like a journey deeper into the wilderness. The course's routing is designed to maximize the natural drama of the landscape, creating a memorable and visually stunning experience on every shot. Playing the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club golf course is a testament to the power of nature and the artistry of golf course design.

The Rainforest Environment

The defining characteristic of the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is its unique rainforest setting. The course is situated in a microclimate on Windward Oahu, where trade winds bring frequent showers, contributing to the incredible biodiversity. This results in vibrant, healthy turf, but also means golfers should be prepared for potentially damp conditions, which can influence ball flight and roll. The dense jungle is home to native Hawaiian plants and birds, creating an ecological sanctuary that enhances the tranquility and exclusivity of the experience. It's truly a

A "Jurassic Park" experience! Tucked into the Ko’olau mountains, this Pete Dye/Greg Norman gem offers stunning jungle views and forced carries. The front nine is tight and punishing, while the back opens up. Bring extra balls—the scenery is 5 stars!

A beautiful course. Unfortunately it rained most of the time when I played. The fairways are narrow so if you play for the first time throttle back. Club down as your normal shots are 10-15 yards short. Staff is friendly. The building is beautiful but only the pro shop and snack bar were open.

Playing golf in Jurassic Park! What a fun experience! Overall, the experience was worth the price of admission. The good: - Course was very challenging and fun - The people were wonderful (particularly Danny!) - I can't rave enough about how cool the course and environment was The bad: - There was a fire in August 2025 which took out a bunch of equipment so you can tell they are still recovering - Driving range is closed indefinitely - The restaurant person didn't come in so there was no food option at the turn (this one bothered me the most but stuff happens) - They stopped renovating the course and so hole 5 (par 5) is in an unplayable state so instead we got a hole 3B which was a boring par 3 Final thoughts: The people were wonderful and very nice and welcoming. Made my group and I feel awesome. The course was incredible. There's some rough parts around the edge but overall if you want to play golf in the rainforest, it's well worth it!
