About This Course

Overview: Makalei Golf Club – A Kona Upland Escape

Perched majestically at an elevation of 2,000 feet on the slopes of Hualālai, Makalei Golf Club stands as a testament to the diverse and captivating golf landscape of the Big Island of Hawaii. Far removed from the bustling coastal resorts, this public 18-hole course in Kailua-Kona offers a distinct and refreshing golf experience, characterized by cooler temperatures, invigorating trade winds, and unparalleled panoramic views of the Kona coastline and the vast Pacific Ocean. For golfers seeking an escape into nature, where every shot is framed by dramatic vistas and the air is crisp with the scent of the uplands, Makalei Golf Club presents an irresistible invitation. It's a course that challenges and delights, catering to an intermediate skill level while providing an unforgettable journey through Hawaii's unique volcanic terrain.

The Makalei Golf Club golf course is not just a round of golf; it's an immersion into the natural beauty and tranquility of the Big Island. From its elevated vantage point, players are treated to a visual feast that stretches from the verdant fairways, through ancient lava flows, to the shimmering turquoise waters below. This comprehensive guide will delve into what makes Makalei Golf Club a must-play destination for any golf enthusiast visiting Hawaii, exploring its history, design, signature holes, playing conditions, and all the essential visitor information you need to plan your ultimate Big Island golf adventure.

Course History & Heritage: Forging a Path in the Uplands

Unlike some of Hawaii's more storied resort courses with decades of history, Makalei Golf Club represents a more modern chapter in Big Island golf. Its inception was driven by a vision to create an accessible yet exceptional golf experience that leveraged the unique topography and climate of the Kona uplands. While specific details about its earliest days might be less public than those of its coastal counterparts, the very existence of a golf course at such an elevation speaks to the ambition and foresight of its developers. The decision to build Makalei Golf Club at 2,000 feet was a deliberate one, designed to offer golfers a distinct alternative to the often-hot and humid conditions found closer to sea level. This elevation provides not only a welcome respite from the heat but also ensures a consistent flow of cooling breezes, making for a more comfortable round even on the sunniest of days.

The development of Makalei Golf Club was a careful endeavor, aiming to integrate the course seamlessly into the existing natural environment. The designers faced the challenge and opportunity of working with the volcanic landscape, incorporating natural contours, lava outcroppings, and indigenous flora into the course's strategic design. This respectful approach to the land has allowed Makalei Golf Club to mature into a course that feels inherently part of the Big Island, rather than an imposition upon it. It stands as a testament to the idea that world-class golf can thrive in harmony with nature, offering a raw, authentic Hawaiian golf experience that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.

Course Layout & Design: A Journey Through Volcanic Beauty

The 18-hole Makalei Golf Club golf course is a masterclass in strategic design, utilizing the natural elevation changes and diverse terrain to create a challenging yet rewarding experience. The course winds its way through lush tropical vegetation, ancient lava flows, and stands of native trees, with each hole presenting its own unique character and set of demands. The undulating fairways often feature significant elevation shifts, requiring precise club selection and an understanding of how the altitude and wind can affect ball flight. Golfers will find themselves hitting both uphill and downhill shots, adding an exciting dimension to the game that keeps every round fresh and engaging.

From the moment you step onto the first tee at Makalei Golf Club, the design philosophy becomes clear: maximize the views while providing a fair test of golf. Generous landing areas are often followed by strategically placed bunkers, challenging greens with subtle breaks, and the ever-present threat of out-of-bounds areas defined by dense jungle or rugged lava fields. The design encourages thoughtful play, rewarding accuracy and course management over brute force. The greens themselves are often multi-tiered or subtly sloped, demanding a keen eye and a delicate touch with the putter. Playing the Makalei Golf Club golf course is a true journey, with each hole unfolding a new vista and a new set of strategic decisions, ensuring that no two rounds ever feel quite the same.

Integrating Nature's Obstacles

One of the most striking aspects of the Makalei Golf Club design is its seamless integration of natural obstacles. Ancient lava flows, remnants of Hualālai's geological past, are not merely aesthetic backdrops but often come into play as challenging hazards. These rugged, dark formations contrast dramatically with the vibrant green of the fairways, creating stunning visual appeal while demanding respect from golfers. The course also features numerous tropical trees and dense undergrowth, which can penalize errant shots, encouraging players to stay on the manicured turf. This naturalistic approach to hazard placement not only enhances the beauty of the course but also ensures a genuine Hawaiian golf experience, where the raw power of nature is always a factor.

Signature Holes: Elevated Drama and Coastal Panoramas

While every hole at Makalei Golf Club offers its own charm and challenge, a few stand out for their dramatic beauty, strategic complexity, and unforgettable views. These signature holes encapsulate the essence of playing golf at 2,000 feet above the Kona coast.

The Panoramic Par-3

Imagine standing on an elevated tee box, the air cool and crisp, with the entire Kona coastline stretching out before you, meeting the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. This particular par-3 at Makalei Golf Club embodies that breathtaking vision. It's a downhill shot, where judging the distance can be tricky due to the elevation drop and the ever-present trade winds. The green is often guarded by bunkers, and any shot pulled or pushed too far could find trouble in the surrounding tropical foliage. It's a moment where you might find yourself pausing, not just to calculate your shot, but to simply soak in the sheer majesty of your surroundings. A well-struck iron here feels like a triumph, and even a bogey is easily forgiven amidst such splendor.

The Lava Lined Dogleg

This challenging par-4 or par-5 (depending on the specific hole) at Makalei Golf Club perfectly illustrates the course's integration with its volcanic environment. The fairway doglegs sharply around a dramatic outcropping of ancient black lava rock, creating a strategic dilemma from the tee. Do you try to cut the corner, risking a costly encounter with the unforgiving lava, or play safely out to the wider part of the fairway, leaving a longer approach? The approach shot is often to an elevated green, making depth perception crucial. This hole demands both power and precision, offering a thrilling test of nerve and skill against the backdrop of the Big Island's geological history.

The Grand Finale

Concluding your round at Makalei Golf Club is often a memorable experience, with a finishing hole that typically offers one last glorious view. This hole might feature a sweeping downhill fairway leading to a green framed by the clubhouse and the distant ocean horizon. The pressure of finishing strong combined with the visual reward makes for an exhilarating end to your round. It’s a hole designed to send you off with a lasting impression of the course's beauty and the unique challenge it presents, solidifying Makalei Golf Club's place in your memory as a truly special Hawaiian golf destination.

Playing Conditions & Difficulty: A Refreshing Challenge

Makalei Golf Club is generally rated as an intermediate difficulty course, making it accessible to a wide range of golfers while still providing a stimulating challenge for more experienced players. The primary factors influencing playing conditions and difficulty include the elevation, the prevailing trade winds, and the course's natural undulations.

The Impact of Elevation

Playing at 2,000 feet above sea level has a noticeable effect on ball flight. The thinner air generally allows the ball to travel further, which can be both an advantage and a challenge. Golfers accustomed to sea-level play will need to adjust their club selection, often opting for one less club than usual, especially on downhill shots. This added distance can be exhilarating, but misjudging it can lead to overshooting greens or carrying hazards that would normally be out of reach. The elevation also contributes to the cooler, more comfortable temperatures, which is a significant advantage during the warmer months on the Big Island.

Navigating the Trade Winds

The Big Island's trade winds are a constant companion at Makalei Golf Club. While they provide a welcome cooling breeze, they can also significantly impact shot trajectory and club selection. Golfers must learn to read the wind, understanding when to play a knockdown shot, when to aim into the wind, or when to allow it to carry the ball. The strategic use of the wind can be a major factor in scoring well, adding another layer of complexity to the course's intermediate difficulty. On some days, the winds can be quite strong, transforming even seemingly simple shots into demanding tests of skill and control.

Course Maintenance and Playability

Makalei Golf Club maintains its fairways and greens to ensure excellent playability year-round. The fairways are typically lush and well-groomed, offering good lies, while the greens are true and receptive, though often with subtle breaks that require careful reading. The course's design, with its natural hazards and elevation changes, ensures that even on a perfectly maintained day, the course presents a fair and engaging challenge. It's a course that rewards thoughtful, strategic play and a good short game, making it a rewarding experience for golfers looking to test their skills in a stunning Hawaiian setting.

What Makes Makalei Golf Club Unique

Makalei Golf Club distinguishes itself from other Big Island golf offerings through several key attributes that create a truly unique golf experience.

The Elevated Perspective

Undoubtedly, the most defining characteristic of Makalei Golf Club is its elevation. Playing at 2,000 feet offers a perspective unlike any other golf course in Hawaii. The panoramic views of the entire Kona coast, stretching north and south, are simply unparalleled. This elevated position also brings cooler temperatures and consistent breezes, providing a refreshing escape from the heat often found at sea-level courses. It's a sensory experience that combines visual grandeur with physical comfort, enhancing every aspect of the round.

A Public Gem with Resort-Quality Views

While many courses with such spectacular views are often private or exclusively resort-affiliated, Makalei Golf Club is a public course, making this incredible experience accessible to everyone. This commitment to public access, combined with its reasonable green fees, positions Makalei as an outstanding value in the Hawaii golf market. It offers a premium golf experience without the premium price tag, appealing to both budget-conscious travelers and those seeking an authentic local golf vibe.

Integration with Natural Hawaiian Landscape

The course's design ethos embraces the natural Hawaiian landscape, integrating ancient lava flows, indigenous vegetation, and the contours of the Hualālai slopes. This creates a raw, authentic feel that connects golfers directly with the Big Island's unique environment. It's a stark contrast to some highly manicured, artificial courses, offering a more organic and immersive journey through Hawaii's natural beauty. This sense of place is a powerful draw for golfers looking for more than just a game, but an experience rooted in the island's character.

Course was a lot different than we’ve had ever played on before. Staff is great a beautiful peacocks it did rain a little bit where we’re on the course. Definitely need a golf cart. Lotta hills would absolutely go back again.

Staff are lovely, no question! However I cannot in good conscience recommend this course. It is poorly maintained, there is a lot of clover so you’ll lose a lot of balls and our golf cart started to kick in and out around 16. This mountain course is unique and challenging with a lot of potential with a major infusion of capital. If you decide to play there just bring a lot of junk balls. 😂 peacocks can be aggressive if they think you’re going to feed them… don’t.
