This delightful 9-hole public course is renowned for having some of the lowest green fees in the entire state, making it an irresistible draw for both seasoned golfers seeking a relaxed round and beginners eager to learn the game amidst breathtaking scenery. More than just a golf course, Kukuiolono is an integral part of Kukuiolono Park, a sprawling botanical garden and cultural site that provides a lush, vibrant backdrop to every swing. Playing a round at Kukuiolono Golf Course means immersing yourself in a serene landscape where panoramic ocean vistas meet meticulously maintained tropical gardens, all under the gentle caress of Kauai's trade winds. For anyone visiting the Garden Isle and looking for an authentic, unpretentious, and utterly charming golf outing, the Kukuiolono Golf Course in Kalaheo is an absolute must-play.
The story of Kukuiolono Golf Course is deeply interwoven with the history of Kauai itself, a testament to the island's spirit of aloha and community. The origins of this beloved golf course date back to 1928, when it was established by Walter D. McBryde, a prominent sugar planter whose vision extended beyond agriculture to include the recreational and cultural enrichment of Kauai's residents. McBryde, a man of significant influence and generosity, developed the grounds not only as a golf course but also as a magnificent botanical garden, drawing inspiration from various cultures and landscapes. His intention was clear: to create a place of beauty and recreation for all to enjoy. In an act of profound civic generosity, McBryde later gifted the entire Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course to the County of Kauai. This philanthropic gesture ensured that this verdant oasis, with its stunning views and recreational opportunities, would forever remain accessible to the public, embodying a legacy that continues to benefit countless visitors and locals alike. This rich heritage gives the Kukuiolono Golf Course a distinct character, setting it apart from more modern, commercially driven developments. It feels like stepping back in time, playing on grounds that have been cherished and preserved for nearly a century, offering a glimpse into Kauai's past while enjoying its present-day beauty. The course's enduring public status is a direct reflection of this foundational gift, cementing its role as a true community asset on the Garden Isle.
The Kukuiolono Golf Course offers a wonderfully approachable 9-hole layout that masterfully utilizes the natural contours and beauty of its Kauai setting. While it may not boast the extensive yardage or complex hazards of championship courses, its design provides a delightful challenge for beginners and a relaxing, enjoyable round for more experienced players. The course is characterized by its relatively flat terrain, making it an easy walk, a feature much appreciated by golfers of all ages. Each hole is thoughtfully integrated into the lush botanical garden environment, meaning players are constantly surrounded by an array of exotic plants, vibrant flowers, and stately trees. The fairways are generally open, forgiving errant shots, which contributes to its beginner-friendly reputation. However, strategic bunkering and the occasional water feature, along with the ever-present Hawaiian trade winds, introduce subtle complexities that demand thoughtful shot-making. The greens at Kukuiolono are typically well-maintained and offer a fair test of putting skill, often featuring gentle undulations that require careful reads. The course's compact nature means a round can be completed in a relatively short amount of time, perfect for those looking to squeeze in a game without dedicating an entire day. This efficient design, combined with its stunning natural beauty, makes the Kukuiolono Golf Course a perfect example of how a 9-hole layout can deliver a truly memorable golf experience on Kauai.
What truly distinguishes the Kukuiolono Golf Course is its seamless integration with the surrounding Kukuiolono Park. As you navigate the course, you'll find yourself playing alongside ancient Hawaiian rock formations, Japanese gardens, and a serene Hawaiian stone bath. This unique symbiosis means every hole offers more than just a golf challenge; it's a journey through a living botanical museum. The design allows for breathtaking views from multiple vantage points, with the deep blue Pacific Ocean shimmering in the distance on many holes. The visual appeal is constant, from the vibrant hibiscus and plumeria lining the fairways to the majestic views of the coastline. The course architects, whether by deliberate design or by simply embracing the natural landscape, created a layout that feels organic and harmonious with its environment. This thoughtful integration ensures that a round at Kukuiolono Golf Course is not just about the score, but about the unparalleled experience of golfing within one of Kauai's most beautiful and historic parks.

Came here the first day of our trip as a warm up. Range is off grass and has an amazing view. Course is quirky and fun. For the price and how it's setup, come ready for a really cheap golf outing on a beautiful island, don't come looking to post an incredible score. The greens are like concrete, so approaches and chips go bouncing back over the green if you're running it up. Great views all around. Your green fee covers you to play as much as you want, but you are using a cart you have to pay the cart fee each time around. If you are at all a serious golfer, I'd probably just go play Wailua. I don't think I'd come back and play unless it was with some new golfers or kids wanting to get out, but it was a fun experience.
Holy cow. What an awesome 9-hole track. $15 cash-only to walk it, carts and pull carts available as well. No tee times; just show up. Tee shirts and tennis shoes are fine. Taco place on site was excellent. Open fairways, good vibes, great views. Skip the pricey resort courses and come play with the locals instead!
This place was so Awesome 🤩. Yeah the fairways maybe aren’t the greenest, but for $15 I certainly don’t care. Not to mention some places double or triple the green fees if you’re not local, as this place doesn’t. I also didn’t find this out till I was done, but the green fee you pay is ALL DAY. Needless to say I will be back during our stay on the island and get there early enough to get another round in. Also as shown in picture #4, I am going to do the par 3 tee boxes next time I visit. Thank you for this course I absolutely LOVED it 🥰
